Crokinole Rules - The ULTIMATE Guide on How to Play Crokinole

Aim of the Game

Score more points than your opponent!

Players take turns trying to shoot their discs into the center hole or into higher scoring circles, while also trying to knock their opponent's discs out of the playing area or into lower scoring circles.

The player with the most points after all discs have been flicked wins the round. Traditionally, several rounds are played until one player accumulates 100 points.

Number of Discs and Players

Crokinole can be played with 2 – 4 players.

2 Players

When 2 players are playing, each player will have 12 discs of a single color to shoot and will sit across from one another.

4 Players

When 4 players are playing, each player will have 6 discs to shoot, and teammates will sit across from each other.

3 Players

Crokinole can also be played with 3 players.

The game can either be played with one team of 2 players and another team of 1 player, or with three teams of 1 player each (if you have a sufficient number of discs).

With two teams, players on a shared team will alternate taking shots and 12 discs will be used.

With three teams players may pick any quadrant and use 8 discs each.

Preparing Your Game

Each player shall choose a disc color and an opposing quadrant of the board from which to shoot from. Once seated, players should not move their seat for the entirety of the round. The starting player may be chosen by any drawing method, and is alternated at the start of each round.

How to Play

Players take turns flicking discs, one at a time, aiming at the center hole or at the opponent’s discs. To shoot, a player places a disc on the board within that player’s quadrant, with the disc touching the shooting line (legal shot), and flicks the disc.

When there are no opposing discs on the board, as is the case with the first shot of the game, the player will take a “free shot” – a shot aimed directly at the center hole. If the disc lands in the center hole the player places it immediately to the side of the board to add to the final score at the end of the round and the next player shoots.

A free shot must land inside or be touching the line of the inner (15) circle - otherwise it is removed from play and placed into the ditch. If the disc is shot into the inner circle and remains in play, the next player takes a shot.

When there is an opposing disc on the board the next player must shoot at that disc. The aim is to knock the opponent’s disc into a lower scoring position while getting the shooter’s disc into a higher scoring position. After a collision, any disc that touches the shooting line must be removed to the ditch.

If the shooter fails to hit any opposing disc, the shooting disc must be removed from play – even if it lands in the center hole. Bouncing a shot off a post or other disc is allowed. However, if an opponent’s disc is not touched, any of the shooter’s discs that are hit in this process must also be removed from play.

Players continue to alternately flick their discs until all 24 discs have been shot.

Scoring

At the end of each round, each team will count their point total. Scoring values for various shots are counted as follows:

  • 20 points – center hole
  • 15 points – inner circle
  • 10 points – middle circle
  •   5 points – outer circle

Discs that are touching the lines separating the circles are counted at the value of the lesser circle.

Once each team’s score has been counted, the difference in scores is added to the winner’s point total. For example, if Team 1 scores 50 points and Team 2 scores 35, the total score awarded is 15 points to Team 1.

Several rounds are played until one team accumulates 100 points.
